Latest Snow Models Back Off To 4-6 Inches For Western Kentucky
There’s a degree of relief in the latest snowfall projections from the National Weather Service for tomorrow night into Wednesday.
Meteorologists say there is still some inconsistency in models to predict how far east the higher snow total probability (8”+) will be shifting. For now, that area looks to be limited to the Missouri Ozarks, and possibly 5 to 8 inches for Cape Girardeau. As a result, they’re scaling back the outlook for western Kentucky to be 4-6 inches.
The National Weather Service has scaled back their highest totals further west into Missouri as of the latest update early Monday morning.
The highest totals will depend on where the heaviest bands set up, and how much dry air the snow has to fight through to reach the ground. That model should come into better focus later today.
Nonetheless, plenty of heavy snow is possible and the winter storm watch is still in effect from Tuesday overnight through Wednesday morning. It’s part of the overall winter storm watch that extends westward over 12 states to Texas and Colorado.
After the snow ends, even colder arctic air will follow behind. Low temperatures in the teens Wednesday morning and single digits Thursday morning will cause wind chills to drop below zero. The greatest impacts from the extreme cold will occur Thursday morning.
